INTERNSHIP AT SIGNIFY

extracurricular internship

Since I was eager to gain more working experience during my master. I decided to do an extracurricular internship at Signify. It is the world leader in lighting for professionals, consumers and lighting for the Internet of Things. Within Signify I worked at the NatureConnect venture. This department creates lighting solutions proven on Biophilic Design principles to reconnect us to the outside world. It mimics the natural patterns of daylight to create comfortable, engaging and attractive indoor environments.

My role within the team was to focus on the next generation of this immersive lighting system. Mainly focusing on how to realize this experience by using hardware. This meant that my internship consisted of two parts. First I had to familiarize myself with how lighting precisely works in nature. By collaborating with the research department of Signify I was able to learn some amazing facts about natural lighting. It felt like a complex puzzle that took time to fully comprehend. The second part of my internship was more an hands on approach. Through the means of a lot of low-fi prototypes my goal was to test and analyze what materials and actuators could improve the lighting pattern. This diverse, yet immersive way of prototyping really allowed me to provide the NatureConnect team with a lot of valuable insights.

The most valuable insight for me during this internship was definitely the method of working of NatureConnect and design department. By using nature as the main inspiration source they come up with innovative ideas and solutions. By implementing these biophilic design principles they create an lighting experience that is totally unique, one that I have never felt before.

Key learning points:

  • Biophilic design principles
  • Design methods on how to use nature as inspiration
  • Complex lighting properties
  • prototyping experience with diverse materials and actuators
  • How different cultures interpreted lighting differently
  • Importance of being flexible, ranging from individual tasks to major changes
